About the Workshop
Ixchel is the 16th-century name of the aged Jaguar Goddess of the moon, midwifery, and medicine in ancient Maya culture. She is related to Toci Yoalticitl (translated as “Our Grandmother the Nocturnal Physician”) and to Cihuacoatl (or Ilamatecuhtli), two Aztec goddesses of sweat baths, fertility and midwifery.

In this workshop, we will embody the energies of our natal moon placements as we turn to these goddesses with respect for their power and inspiration. Our time will include an introduction to Ixchel and somatic exploration of her qualities. We will consider the significations of the moon in Mayan culture and astrology through traditional poetry and songs, as well as Western astrological frameworks for working with the moon’s lunar cycles and phases. Participants will be guided through an embodied exploration of their natal moon placements that will birth love songs and lunar poems that we will then share with each other.

JULENNE ESQUINCA (She/They) is a Mexican visual artist who has been exploring the body through various techniques that range from yoga to classical Indian dance, dance movement therapy (DMT) and somatics. They’re also a Buddhist practitioner and, in the field of astrology, have spent 2 and a half years working with the Latin American astrologer Mia Astral. They continue to develop their astrology studies with Embodied Astrology and other astrologers and they are interested in blending movement and astrology as practices within the Latinx community.
