Happy full moon in Sagittarius!
As you know… the full moon is an opposition between the Sun and the Moon, and is, therefore, an activation of polarity. The late, great Esoteric Astrologer Alice Bailey suggested that rather than there being 12 signs in the zodiac, there are actually six polarities. Each polarity, or set of opposing zodiac signs, is a continuum of expression. Two opposing signs will each contain the essence, and the evolutionary need, of the other.
The polarity of this full moon extends between the signs Gemini (where the Sun is currently) and Sagittarius (where the Moon is today.) I think of the Gemini/Sagittarius polarity as the axis of learning. Gemini describes the kind of learning that is circumstantial and unchosen. Gemini rules siblings, early environments, elementary education, neighbors, neighborhoods, and the first language(s) you speak. These are some of the people, places, and things that socialize you, and form the basis of your basic understanding.
Sagittarius on the other hand, rules foreign people, foreign lands, foreign languages, and long distance travel. It is the education, religion, philosophies, teachers, and guides that you seek out. While Gemini is associated to the ways your mind and communicative abilities are formed by your immediate environment and relationships, Sagittarius represents the journeys you must undertake to broaden your horizons, increase your knowledge, and expand your worldview.
In classical astrology, Sagittarius is ruled by the planet Jupiter, and Gemini is ruled by Mercury. You can think of planetary rulers as the emissaries of their signs. Rulers encapsulate a sign’s energy and purpose. When planets transit (travel) through the zodiac and aspect positions in your natal chart, they create sensations and experiences which stimulate the needs of the signs they represent. In this example, Jupiter is a planet that stimulates the need to expand understanding and grow through one’s experiences in whatever sign or house it might be traveling through, while a Mercury transit will bring increased mental activity and communications to those places.
In the Esoteric system, Gemini is ruled by Venus and Sagittarius is ruled by Earth. Through this lens we can understand the higher vibrational frequencies that the planets bring. Gemini, in its classical rulership, suggests the connections we make through our minds (Mercury rules the cognitive function.) But, in its esoteric rulership with Venus, Gemini’s connecting ability is heart-centered and love-based.
Sagittarius ruled by the Earth presents an extremely interesting (to me) idea! Especially since the sign of Sagittarius is where we find the galactic center, Earth rulership suggests that the wisdom we seek is not so far away, but rather, right here… and if you take a moment to remember that your body itself is made of Earth, then we arrive at the basic premise of astrology itself, As Above, So Below.
