Transcending "I" - Embodied Astrology for Aries Season (March 19 - April 19, 2020)

Hi,

I wish I could see you. I’m imagining your face, reading this, or maybe not reading this. Do you open these emails? I don’t really know.

I wonder how you are right now? I wonder what you’re doing, and how your health is, how your family’s health is? I wonder how you are faring during this strange time when so much is wobbling? I wonder how your heart is–not necessarily the actual organ, though yes, that too–but, you know, the place where you care from. How is that?

It’s the equinox today and I’m in North America. Which means that today the day and night are equal lengths, which means that tomorrow the daylight will be just a few minutes longer, and the day after tomorrow the light will last a few minutes longer again. It means that Spring is here and Summer is coming and Winter is now in the past until it’s in the future again. I went walking this evening in the long dusky light and watched hundreds of ducks congregating on a lake. The muskrats were busy and birds were chirping and I was amazed that only a month ago the whole lake was frozen over (I could walk out onto the actual middle of it!) and I was thinking about my friends in South America and wondering what it feels like for them to be moving into Autumn.

In astrology-land, today marks the beginning of Aries Season. Because the kind of astrology I’ve learned was conceived in the north, I think Aries is given to this season because of how it feels when the sun finally comes back after a long winter. You know that feeling? It’s like a supercharge, fuck yeah!, spring into action, grab the day, open your eyes, breathe deep, pound your chest, holler at the top of your lungs, take off running down the street, tear off your clothes, ravish each other, rough and tumble, maybe get in a fight, climb a mountain, kick down a door, barge in, that kind of hug where you jump up on a person and tackle them, then tag-you’re-it, take off tearing down the street again, hop on a motorcycle, do something risky, do something heroic, listen to loud music with all your friends in the car with the windows rolled down smoking joints no seat belts who-gives-a-fuck, laugh in the face of danger, then because it’s dangerous and the moment is now, fall head-over-heels crazy romantic in love.

I’ve been thinking about how much we need Aries energy now, but also how much we need its opposite, Libra. In this weird moment, when everything is breaking down and no one knows what’s going to come next, we need the fierce optimism and bravery of Aries and we also need the gentle considerations and social finesse of Libra. We need courageous warriors who refuse to live in a box under anyone else’s rules. And, we also need fierce companions and communities that work righteously for the good of all.

What impresses me most about Aries Season this year is that (along with marking the beginning of the astrological new year) it marks the beginning of a very significant change. In the traditional methods of astrological time-keeping, we are nearing an end (which is also a beginning) of a 200-year cycle. The cycle we are leaving could be considered synonymous with the Industrial Age. This cycle has promoted accumulation of personal wealth, materialism, fossil-fuel industries and hierarchies of authority. The cycle we are moving into suggests a shifting of values from materialism to intelligence, communications, science and social cohesion. Astrology doesn’t speak to “good” or “bad,” just energy and potential. Where we go and what we do with this new cycle is up to us.

“Us.” What a concept! Sometimes I think I know what “us” is, but most of the time, I don’t. Beyond our similar classification as homosapien. Beyond the fact that everyone lives in a body and therefore, needs the things that bodies need, like water, air, food, shelter and maybe companionship… I really don’t know what makes “us.” But, I think that something does. And, sometimes I think that maybe what it is, is actually our differences. Maybe, today I’d like to imagine us as stars. Apart and part of the same spinning galaxy. Each one burning and emanating radiance, forming constellations, and when we die, leaving trails of light that streak through the sky.

Thank you for being here with me.

In solidarity, with love,

R
