Virgo, as a symbol, represents the changeability and adaptation of Earth, and the resilience and fortitude of nature as it organizes itself. Virgo can be seen in plants that grow in symbiosis with each other, insects and animals who evolve with landscapes as they mature and shift. Virgo represents discrimination and calculation. It is the ability to identify opportunities for improvement, and the power and instinct to make use of what’s tangible by differentiating, separating, sorting and categorizing. In Virgo we can observe the magic of spirit as it manifests through the details of material forms in their growth and refinement.
Virgo is an earth sign. It relates specifically to life on earth – plants, animals and insects – and perhaps also, the idea of the sentience of Earth or its “personality” as a living being. Virgo rules the details of Earth and the many pieces that comprise the whole. It can be observed in the interconnections and communications between organisms, systems and cells.
In the astrological framework, earth is the element of practical manifestation. The desire for practicality and manifestation can be seen in all of the earth signs, but in Virgo especially we find the labor and dedication required for any tangible outcome. This sign teaches us to attend to each step, to not skip over the fine details, to humble ourselves and commit to the process, to devote ourselves to a larger, vaster vision. Virgo asks us to use our intelligence and to notice the nuances. It enforces a process and reminds us that only through trial, error and repetition will we eventually reach refinement.
As we learn and grow through Virgo, we must recognize the limits and capacities of our own ability and attention and discern the appropriate applications of our energy. This sign asks us to attend to the practical and mundane: jobs and tasks must be committed to and completed in order to survive and sustain. For most of us, most days include at least a handful of obligatory chores (if not an entire day of labor) that we may not choose by our own preference, but must perform for a variety of reasons, any of which can be reduced to the needs of living in society and on Earth. Many of Virgo’s most important lessons are delivered through this attending. When we ignore clutter and mess, what results is overwhelm and chaos. If we disregard the various needs of material existence – the most fundamental of which is maintenance and care for own bodies and environments – our experiences are filled with unnecessary suffering, confusion and pollution.
