The end of Autumn and Spring are times when the light is very curious and interesting here on Earth. By the end of Spring, we’ve reached the longest day and greatest light at either pole. The fertility and freshness of Spring has not yet given way to the full blown heat of summer, and the air has a sparkly shine to it. By the end of Autumn, we will reach the longest night and greatest dark at either pole. The last bright hues of Autumn leaves pop out in increasingly stark and darker landscapes, and our eyes are pulled to search deeper and more broadly for the light we can find. 

Sagittarius literally forces us to open our eyes and let light in. In this way it is associated to any manner of experiences, things, or people that expand our vision, open our minds, or give us a sense of direction to pursue. As a symbol, Sagittarius represents a search for truth and meaning. It is associated with the quests we undertake to seek out wisdom, perspective and knowledge, as well as the people who will teach or guide us on these paths, and the places where we might find them.  As we learn and grow through Sagittarius, we must seek our own understandings of truth and define our personal beliefs. What we believe, and the truths we perceive, will directly influence the ways we each feel directed in our purpose. Sagittarius then is also a symbol of purposefulness and conviction. It represents the paths and quests for growth we feel compelled to explore, and the ways we orient and navigate towards the meaning we make out of our lives

Awareness of Sagittarius’ expression and needs will be both conscious and unconscious for anyone. When unconscious, Sagittarius can easily manifest as arrogant, opinionated and fundamentalist. It can breed overzealous convictions and lend toward impulses to evangelize and preach, whether or not a chosen audience desires the information and convictions being shared. In a collective manifestation, Sagittarius can be seen in religious and philosophic dogmas and belief systems (and those who preach their beliefs) that justify violence and manipulation in order to “spread the word,” and would rather erase diversity of belief or expression than release superiority. 

When conscious, Sagittarius’ traits can manifest as love of adventure, optimism and the good fortune that optimistic outlooks often bring, humorous curiosity (“beginner’s mind”), and the ability to recognize, appreciate, and expand upon deeper truths and essential wisdom found through life’s ups and downs. In a collective manifestation Sagittarius can be found in vast places of learning (like libraries) where self-directed study and exploratory, associative tangents can be pursued. Any experience which creates a feeling of awe (an overwhelming feeling of reverence, admiration, fear, etc., produced by that which is grand, sublime, extremely powerful, or the like), is an experience where Sagittarius’ essence is strong and vibrant!
